Red Sox Offer Ortiz, Wheeler Arbitration

The title says enough that I don't have to write a topic sentence here. I'll do one anyways though; the Red Sox have offered arbitration to David Ortiz (right) and Dan Wheeler. Ortiz had a monster year in 2011, hitting .309/29/96, reverting back to his masher form from 2003-2007. Ortiz would be a Type A free agent, so we would get a draft pick if he signed elsewhere. However, he has stated that he would like to stay in Boston. He also has said he would like a multi-year deal, something he may not get with arbitration. However, he would get a raise from the $12.5 million he earned last year-- something that may tempt him. Wheeler had a fairly mediocre year last season in the bullpen, not quite living up to expectations. He went 2-2/4.38/39 in his first (and possibly only) year in Boston. Through arbitration, the Red Sox would have to offer him at least $2.4 million. This may be tempting to him, because after a mediocre year, I doubt he'd get more than that on the open market; I also doubt he'd get a multi-year deal. I think Wheeler is a good chance to resign, and Papi is a something like 60% in my opinion.

Red Sox Decline Options For Wheeler and Atchison

Well, I figure I don't need a topic sentence for this post, as you probably got the gist of it from the title. However, two Red Sox relievers may not be coming back for 2012. The Red Sox declined Dan Wheeler's $3 million options and Scott Atchison's option for league minimum. I would say there is about a 50/50 chance that the Sox keep Wheeler, but they probably won't bring back Atchison. Wheeler had a decent year in 2011, but he did not live up to expectations, going 2-2/4.38/39. Scott Atchison bounced between Boston and Pawtucket for pretty much the whole year, but while he was in Boston, he was pretty effective, going 1-0/3.26/17. I would not mind seeing either of these guys back in the bullpen, especially Wheeler, as he's proven to be more consistent over the years. I don't see them bringing back Atchison for any less than his option so he's probably gone; however, if they could get Wheeler at around $2 million- I'd consider it a good move.

Gone-zo! Adrian Powers Sox Over Rangers (80-50)

Last night, the Sox played a very good game all around, hitting well and stifling the Rangers in a 6-0 win. In the 1st inning, with 2 outs, Adrian Gonzalez took a low fastball to center field for his first home run of the game. An inning later, David Ortiz took a low and inside fastball, and crushed it to dead right field giving the Sox an early 2-0 lead. After Jed Lowrie walked in the 3rd, Adrian Gonzalez did literally the same thing as he did last time up, taking a low fastball and turning it around the center field to make it 4-0. After Carl Crawford lined a single up the middle in the 4th, Jarrod Saltalamacchia immediately delivered by crushing an outside fastball right back where it came, homered to the opposite field to give the Sox a 6-0 lead, which they easily held.
     This game was probably the best I've ever seen Andrew Miller pitch as he was dominant, striking out 6 and walking 2 while allowing 3 hits in 6 1/3 innings; he is now 6-1/4.42/39. He was relieved with Alfredo Aceves, who threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings and Dan Wheeler who threw a scoreless inning in relief. Adrian Gonzalez (left) had a great game, going 2-4 with 2 home runs, a solo and a 2-run, as he is having a great season at .348/23/102. David Ortiz went 1-3, but that one hit was a big solo home run, as he is now .301/25/81. Jarrod Saltalamacchia went 2-4, including that 2-run homer that really put the game away, as he is now .251/14/44. Tonight, the Red Sox will head back home to face Oakland, and will put Tim Wakefield (6-5/4.97/69) out on the hill to get his 200th win against Gio Gonzalez (10-11/3.24/155).

This was a great game for us, and after the Yankees beat the A's we remain in 1st by a game.

Red Sox Manage Just 3 Hits For 3rd Straight Game (74-48)

Today, the Red Sox played another tough game against the Rays, losing 4-0. After a double, a wild pitch, and a walk with 1 out in the 1st inning, Ben Zobrist bounced a ball to second to allow a run to score and make it 1-0. In the 4th, B.J. Upton led off the inning with a long drive over the Green Monster to make it 2-0. In the 5th, Evan Longoria homered with 2 outs in the inning to give the Rays a 3-0 advantage. With runners at 1st and 2nd with 2 outs in the 7th inning, Ben Zobrist hit a line drive back to the Monster which knocked off the wall allowing a run to score and make it 4-0.

John Lackey was decent, allowing 4 runs and striking out 7 through 6 2/3 innings. He is now 11-9/6.02/86 in a tough year for him. Alfredo Aceves tossed a scoreless 1 1/3 innings and Dan Wheeler threw a scoreless inning in relief. Once again, the Red Sox only managed 3 hits in the ballgame. These belonged to Jacoby Ellsbury (1-3 with a triple), Dustin Pedroia (1-3), and Kevin Youkilis (1-4). Tomorrow, the Sox will head to Kansas City and will send Josh Beckett (9-5/2.40/133) up against Luke Hochevar (8-9/4.89/90) and the Royals.

2004 Relived, Red Sox Get To Rivera, Win In Extras (70-43)

Last night, the Red Sox and Yankees played a heck of a game, as the Sox won 3-2 in the 10th inning to take 1st place. In the 2nd inning, the Red Sox loaded the bases on a walk and two hits with nobody out. However, the next two batters, Jason Varitek and Josh Reddick each got out before a Marco Scutaro line drive into right field made it 1-0. In the 5th, Eduardo Nunez crushed a home run to left field over the monster to tie it up at 1-1. In the 7th, another Yankees homer, this one by Brett Gardner made it 2-1. In the 9th, Marco Scutaro doubled to lead off the inning, and a Jacoby Ellsbury bunt put him at 3rd base with just one out. Dustin Pedroia obliged and hit a fly ball deep, and Scutaro was able to tag up and tie the game at 2-2. In the 10th, David Ortiz doubled with one out, and after Phil Hughes intentionally walked Carl Crawford, Josh Reddick came through with a drive to left with Gardner was unable to reach, and the Sox won!

Josh Beckett was very good, allowing 1 earned run in 6 innings, as he is now 9-4/2.17/127. He was relieved with Matt Albers for 2/3 of an inning (gave up 1 run), Franklin Morales for 1/3, then Dan Wheeler, Jonathan Papelbon, and Daniel Bard (got the win) for 1 inning. Dustin Pedroia had a good game, going 1-3 with an RBI. David Ortiz went 2-4. Carl Crawford went 3-4 and raised his average to .260, as he's been really hot lately. Josh Reddick had a god-awful day, going 1-5 and stranding 6 runners, but I suppose since he got the walk-off hit he's a bright spot as well. Marco Scutaro had a great day as well, going 4-4 with a run and an RBI, as he is now .272/5/24. Tomorrow, the Sox will head to Minneapolis and will send Tim Wakefield (6-4/4.99/58) to get his 200th win against Scott Baker (8-6/3.01/115).

The Grand Papi Lifts Red Sox (64-38)

Last night, the Red Sox beat the Royals 12-5, as their offense as just so good again. The Royals got off to a very fast start off of John Lackey on a crushed 3-run homer over the green monster by Eric Hosmer. However, the Red Sox got two of those runs right back on back-to-back homers by Jacoby Ellsbury (off the pesky pole) and Dustin Pedroia (onto Lansdowne St.), two very different home runs, but effective nonetheless. In the 2nd inning, the Red Sox loaded the bases with no outs, and after Jacoby Ellsbury walked, they tied the game at 3-3. Dustin Pedroia then flew out to right field to give the Sox a 4-3 lead. Then Adrian Gonzalez grounded up the middle, scoring on Ellsbury if not for a would-be single on a great play by Chris Getz. In the 4th, an RBI single for Yamaico Navarro scored Darnell McDonald made it 6-3. Then later in the inning, a small milestone took place as David Ortiz knocked a grand slam into the bullpens to make it 10-3. In the 5th, Billy Butler crushed a ball onto Lansdowne St. for the second straight game to make it 10-4. In the 6th, the Sox got that run back on an RBI single up the middle by none other than the great RBI machine Adrian Gonzalez, making it 11-4. In the 8th, an Eric Hosmer single drove home Alex Gordon to make it 11-5. In the bottom of the 8th, Jacoby Ellsbury came home on a long drive off the monster by Adrian Gonzalez, as he earned his 3rd RBI of the game despite being thrown out going for a double to make it 12-5.

John Lackey was not bad, as although he gave up 4 runs in 5 2/3 innings, he gave up 3 of those on an Eric Hosmer home run in the 1st inning. After that start he is now 9-8/6.20/66, as he is not having a very good season. He was relieved by Randy Williams, who allowed a run in 1 2/3 innings and Dan Wheeler who pitched a scoreless 1 2/3 innings. Jacoby Ellsbury had a great game, going 3-4 with 3 runs and 2 RBIs, as well as the solo home run to lead off the game, he is now .325/17/60. Dustin Pedroia also had a great game, going 3-4 with 2 runs and 2 RBIs, as well as a homer as he is now .308/14/53. Adrian Gonzalez also had a good game, going 3-5 with a run and 3 RBIs, as he is now .351/17/87. David Ortiz only went 1-4, but that one hit was huge, as it was a grand slam over the bullpens, that accounted for his 1,000th RBI as a Red Sock. Darnell McDonald had a rare good game, going 2-4 with 2 runs scored. Yamaico Navarro also had a good game, going 2-4 with a run and an RBI despite some blunders playing the green monster for his first time ever. Today at 1:35, Josh Beckett (9-3/2.07/107) and Luke Hochevar (6-8/5.29/66) will square off as the Sox will look for a series win.

Pedroia Is The Hero Again As Red Sox Smash Orioles (58-36)

Last night, I was live at the game as the Red Sox beat the Orioles 15-10 in a definite pitching game (sarcasm). The Orioles got an early lead in the 1st as with runners on 1st and 2nd, Derrek Lee crushed a 2-run double off the center field wall. In the 3rd, a leadoff homer by Jarrod Saltalamacchia put the Sox back in the game. Then later in the inning, with runners at 1st and 2nd, singles by Dustin Pedroia and Adrian Gonzalez gave the Sox a 3-2 lead. With runners on 1st and 2nd in the 4th, an error by Derrek Lee and a sacrifice fly by Jacoby Ellsbury made it 5-2. In the 5th, Josh Reddick smacked a home run to give the Sox a 6-2 advantage. In the bottom of the 5th, however, all hell broke loose as a 2-run homer by J.J. Hardy narrowed the lead to 6-4. Then an Adam Jones home run cut it even further to 6-5. With the bases loaded, later in the inning, Nolan Reimold hit a perfectly placed double down the left field line, scoring 2 and making it 7-6 Orioles. With runners on 1st and 2nd in the 7th, Kevin Youkilis singled one home to make it 7-7. In the 8th, the Red Sox loaded the bases with 1 out, setting up for a big inning. Dustin Pedroia broke the tie with a rocket double out to right field to make it 9-7. Then Kevin Youkilis smacked a 2-run single to make it 11-7. An RBI single by Carl Crawford (first day back from the DL) made it 12-7. Finally, a Darnell McDonald double really put the book on this game, as he cleared the bases and made it 15-7. However, the Orioles were not done either, in the bottom half, an RBI single by J.D. Hardy and a 2-run single by Nick Markakis made it 15-10.

Tim Wakefield was pretty bad, allowing 7 runs, 3 earned, in 4 2/3 innings. Dan Wheeler took over and tossed 2 1/3 innings of shutout baseball, earning the win, as he did a great job of not letting things get out of hand. Randy Williams allowed 3 runs in an inning

and Franklin Morales tossed a scoreless inning. Jacoby Ellsbury had a great game, going 3-4 with 3 runs and an RBI. Dustin Pedroia also did well, going 2-5 with a run and 3 RBIs. Kevin Youkilis had a great game, going 2-6 with 1 run and 3 RBIs. Josh Reddick went 1-4 with 2 runs and a solo home run, he is now .347/4/18. Carl Crawford did well in his first day back, going 2-5 with 2 runs and an RBI. Jarrod Saltalamacchia (left) went 2-5 with 2 runs and a solo home run, as he is now .247/7/25. Darnell McDonald came off the bench, and knocked a 3-run double, wow. Marco Scutaro also did well, going 2-5 with 2 runs scored. Tonight, Kyle Weiland (0-0/13.50/2) and Jeremy Guthrie (3-13/4.45/80) will start.

Red Sox Burst Late in 6 Run 7th Inning (47-34)

This was a great game, it looked like a certain loss up until the 7th inning, when the Sox scored 6 runs to get back in it. Marco Scutaro (right) led off the game in a big way, crushing a home run over the left field wall on the 5th pitch of the game. However, the Astros tied it back up in the bottom of the 1st on a sacrifice fly by Hunter Pence. In the bottom of the 2nd, the Astros came through again on an RBI single for Angel Sanchez (former Red Sox) and a double by Hunter Pence to make it 3-1. In the bottom of the 5th, an RBI double by Carlos Lee made it 4-1. In the 6th, the Astros pitcher Bud Norris singled on a line to left, scoring a run and making it 5-1 Astros. In the top of the 7th, it all changed as the Sox put runners at first and second to start the inning. Josh Reddick doubled on a ball down the right field line to make it 5-2. Then, Drew Sutton hit a hard groundball at the shortstop Clint Barmes, who missed it, scoring a run and making it 5-3. The Red Sox then loaded the bases, preparing for Dustin Pedroia's big hit, a 2-run single down the right field line to make it 5-5. In the nextat-bat, Adrian Gonzalez crushed a ball of the left-center wall, in Fenway it would've been gone, in any other ballpark, it would've been gone, but in Minute Maid Park, it was a 2-run double to make it 7-5.

Tim Wakefield was not good, allowing 5 runs and 11 hits in 5 1/3 innings. He got a no-decision and is now 4-3/4.82/33, as the knuckler wasn't working. The bullpen was perfect, as Dan Wheeler (2/3 of an inning, plus the win), Matt Albers (2/3), Franklin Morales (1/3), Daniel Bard (1), and Jonathan Papelbon (1 plus the save) all pitched last night. went 1-3 with 2 RBIs and a run scored, all of them very important runs. Adrian Gonzalez only went 1-5, but his hit was huge, a big 2-run double, his 72nd and 73rd RBIs of the year. Josh Reddick had another great day at 2-4 with a run and RBI, as he is on a tear, now batting .450, this kid's for real. Drew Sutton went 1-2 with a run and an RBI, despite playing sub-par left field (he's an infielder). Tonight, at 6:05, Andrew Miller (1-0/3.09/10) and J.A. Happ (3-9/5.54/77) will battle.

This was a fantastic game, it seemed bleak for much of the game, but the Sox turned it around. Also, that was Game #81, the halfway point in the season, they are 47-34, on pace for a 94-68 season, however, they had some tough times in the first half, 0-6, 2-10; so, I hope my prediction of 98-64 is more realistic.

Red Sox Score Early, But Not Often, In Loss To Pirates (44-31)

Last night the Red Sox lost 3-1 to the Pirates as their offense was just held in check the whole game. They scored early in the 1st inning, as with runners on the corners, Kevin Youkilis bounced a ball to third base, scoring Jacoby Ellsbury to make it 1-0. In the 3rd inning, the Pirates loaded the bases with no out, preparing for a single that literally bounced off third base by Ronny Cedeno and a double play on Chase d'Arnaud to give the Pirates a 2-1 lead. In the 6th, Lyle Overbay brought in Neil Walker to give the Pirates a 3-1 lead, but that's all she... or in this case, he, wrote.

Jon Lester (right) was actually pretty sharp, allowing 3 runs, 2 earned, in 6 innings. He still lost, however, and is now 9-4/3.66/100. In relief, Matt Albers threw 2/3 of an inning, Tommy Hottovy threw 1/3 and Dan Wheeler threw a scoreless inning. Adrian Gonzalez continued his torrid streak, going 2-4 and raising his average up to a remarkable .360 mark. Jason Varitek actually had a good game, going 2-3. Tonight, Tim Wakefield (4-2/4.26/31) will take his first trip to PIttsburgh since 1993, when he was a member of the team, and will face Jeff Karstens (4-4/2.54/51).

This was a tough game, and I'm disappointed they lost.

Red Sox Lose Game, Series, To Padres (44-30)

I'm sorry I couldn't post yesterday, but the Red Sox lost 5-4, and today they allowed 5 runs for the 3rd straight game in a 5-1 loss to the Padres. The Padres got rolling immediately on a leadoff homer by Will Venable in the 1st inning. With the bases loaded in the 4th, the Padres struck again with a walk to Will Venable. After that, Lackey hit former Ray Jason Bartlett (success?) to make it 3-0. In the next at-bat, a wild pitch and a single for Chase Headley pushed it to 5-0. In the 5th inning, Jacoby Ellsbury ran home on a single by Adrian Gonzalez to make it 5-1, the final.

John Lackey was not sharp, allowing 5 runs in 3 1/3 innings, earning the loss and becoming 5-6/7.36/34. Michael Bowden threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings, Matt Albers threw 2 scoreless innings, and Dan Wheeler threw a scoreless inning. Dustin Pedroia did a good job of reaching base, going 2-3 with a walk. Adrian Gonzalez had a great game against his old team, going 4-4 with an RBI single, as he is now .359/15/69. Kevin Youkilis went 2-4. After a day off tomorrow, the Sox will head to Pittsburgh, sending Jon Lester (9-3/3.70/95) against Paul Maholm (3-8/3.29/61).

Red Sox Unable To Come Back Against White Sox (30-25)

The White Sox got off to an early lead in the 2nd inning, as with the bases loaded, Gordon Beckham singled through the left side to make it 1-0. It quickly became 2-0 as Jed Lowrie botched a ground ball by Brent Morel to shortstop. Still with the bases loaded, Alexei Ramirez singled right up the middle, scoring two and making it 4-0. In the 3rd, the White Sox padded their lead as an A.J. Pierzynski double hopped into the crowd, scoring Paul Konerko and making it 5-0. In the bottom of the 3rd, Jason Varitek lined a ball into the bullpen for a home run, making it 5-1 White Sox. In the 4th, Brent Morel scored after Alexei Ramirez was caught in a rundown after a single to center, making it 6-1. In the 6th, the White Sox put runners on second and third with one out, both of whom came on in a single by Juan Pierre. Carlos Quentin proceeded to hit one of the green monster, scoring Pierre and making it 9-1. Paul Konerko then knocked a sacrifice fly out to right field, scoring Alexei Ramirez and making it 10-1. In the bottom of the eighth, Josh Reddick came in to score on a Drew Sutton single to make it 10-2. However, the Red Sox got a bunch back as Drew Sutton and Kevin Youkilis came around on an opposite field home run by David Ortiz over the green monster to make it 10-5. In the 9th, after the Red Sox put runners on the corners with 1 out, before a sacrifice fly by Josh Reddick to make it 10-6. Then Drew Sutton doubled to right field, scoring Jason Varitek and making it 10-7, but that would be it.

Alfredo Aceves was not good at all for the Sox, allowing 8 runs, 6 earned in 5 innings, earning the loss and making him 2-1/3.51/18. Scott Atchison was not much better, allowing 2 runs in 2 innings of relief. Bobby Jenks and Dan Wheeler, coming off the DL, each threw scoreless innings. After Dustin Pedroia went to the bench after an 0-2 day, Drew Sutton came in and performed nicely, going 2-2 with a run and 2 RBIs. David Ortiz had a very good game, going 2-4 with that big 3-run homer, as he is now .310/12/27. Jason Varitek had a very good game, going 3-4 with 2 runs scored and a solo home run, he is now .235/2/8. Today at 1:35, Tim Wakefield (2-1/4.14/16) will try to stop a sweep against Gavin Floyd (5-5/3.69/56).
