Weekly News

This guy is good, Jason Bay has won his 7th Player of the week award. This week Jason Bay hit 2 homers and drove in 5 runs to lead the Sox to a fantastic week, as they went 6-1 this week. They got this record with a 3-1 series vs. the White Sox and a 3-game sweep of the Blue Jays. Great moments of this week included Paul Byrd's first start (and win) of '09, Nick Green pitching, Papi's walk-off homer, and Billy Wagner's first Sox appearance. Unfortunately, I am starting school so if you start seeing my rate of posts go down, that is why. Currently the Red Sox are 6 games behind the Yanks, but 2.5 ahead of the Rangers for the wild card lead. The Sox have a tough week on the road next week, going down to Tampa Bay, then to Chicago. Go Sox! (Bay is unstoppable)

Sox Business: Demotions, Promotions, and Trades

Today the Sox made 3 big roster changes, one promotion, one deomtion, and one trade. The trade was for Joey Gathright, (right) from the Baltimore Orioles. He is a terrific fielder and a quick runner and will probably be a backup outfielder for the remainder of the season. In 20 games split between Chicago and baltimore, Gathright is hitting .214 with no homers or RBIs. The promotion of today was Marcus McBeth coming up from AAA Pawtucket. In 42 games with Pawtucket this year, he is 2-2 with a 2.70 ERA, in his minor league career he has been with Oakland and Cincinnatti. The demotion of today was Junichi Tazawa going from the Sox all the way down to the GCL Red Sox, the lowest rank you can go to. In MLB this year, Tazawa was 2-3 with a 6.65 ERA in 5 games. They lead 1-0 in the 4th over the Jays currently.

Bullpen Effective in 3-1 Series

Last night, the Sox went down 9-5 to the White Sox, but there was an... interesting moment, when Nick Green (backup shortstop) came in the pitch in the 8th inning, (right) he pitched 2 innings of scoreless relief in Boston's first and only loss of the series as the Sox won it 3-1. In the other 3 games of the series, the bullpen won all of the games, Ramirez, (7-3)Delcarmen, (5-2) and Bard. (1-1)Tonight through Sunday, the Sox play the Jays, and the Yankees play the White Sox. The Sox stand at 73-54 and 6 games behind the Yankees. The Sox are 1.5 games ahead of the Rangers for the top wild card position. Tonight, Beckett goes for a good game, to stop his streak of 2 really bad games, ( the first to Toronto) but if he can brush all that aside and pitch like the ace he is, there shouldn't be a problem!

He Steals from the Rich and Gives to the Score

Last night, the Red Sox beat the Sox of the other color 6-3, in this game, Jacoby Ellsbury beat the single-season steals record for the Sox, with 55, also leading the AL! He had a fantastic game last night, going 3-5 with a double and an RBI. That RBI was the 6th run in the Sox' rallying 3-run eighth, starting with a homer by Jason Bay. Other good news, the Rangers beat the Yankees putting them 6 games back in the AL East at 72-53, the 4th best record in MLB. The Rangers came back from a 4-run defecit in their game and hung on to beat the Yanks 10-9. Jacoby Ellsbury, this year's line is .298, 6, 45! Also yesterday, the Red Sox acquired reliever, Billy Wagner from the Mets, he is coming off of Tommy John surgery, but he has had two good outings with the Mets since, he will be a set-up man for the Sox. Go Sox, go Rangers for tonight's games!

Weekly News

For his 6th time of this season, David ortiz has won the Player of the Week award, and has tied Jason Bay for 1st place! Last week he had 4 Hrs, and 11 RBIs and led the Sox to a 4-2 week with a sweep of Toronto and a 1-2 series against the Yanks. Last night was one of the greatest nights of my life as I went to see the Red Sox play the White Sox at Fenway Park. The Sox won 12-8, and my favorite play of the game was, in the 3rd inning, Mike Lowell hit a 3-run jack over the monster onto Lansdowne Street to give the Sox a 7-4 lead. Later in the game, Drew hit a solo shot to make it 10-7 and spark a 3-run 7th for the Sox. The White Sox also got 2 homers, Gordon Beckham hit a 22-run shot over the monster, and paul Konerko hit a 3-run over the monster, it was so fun! Yanks and Rangers play tonight so a win-win situation for the Sox!

Sox Move to Front Seat in Wild Card

Last night the Red Sox dominated the Blue Jays, in a 6-1 victory against Toronto. Clay Buchholz was in the driver's seat in this game as he pitched fantastically, allowing 1 ER through 6 innings while striking out 4. The Sox were also backed by homers from Ortiz (19th), Bay (27th), and Martinez (19th). The most excellent part of this however was that the Sox beat one of the best in the business, Roy Halladay, who allowed 5 runs through 5 innings, his shortest healthy outing since 2007. Buuchholz is now 2-3 with a 3.99 ERA. Meanwhile, in Texas, Minnesota came back from their second deficit by at least 4 runs in a row and beat Texas 5-4. This puts the Sox 1 game ahead of the rangers for the driver's seat in the wild card position, the Sox are also 7 games behind the Yanks. Tonight Lester goes on the hill to try and sweep the Jays!

Slugfests in Toronto and Texas Bring Tie

Last night, there were two slugfests, the first and foremost one was in Toronto, Red Sox vs. Blue Jays. The Red Sox won the game 10-9, as the Blue Jays made a huge comeback in the late innings, but a crazy error by pitcher Casey Janssen in the eighth brought home a run in a incredible 3-run rally that gave the Sox a win. Big Papi (right) hit a homer and 2-run double, as well as scoring three runs including the winning run. Meanwile in Texas, there was an amazing game, Rangers vs. Twins. The Twins won this game 9-6, tying the Sox for the Wild Card lead. The Rangers led 5-0 at a point of this game, then the Twins tied it at 5-5, then Joe Mauer and Delmon Young delivered jacks to win it for the twins, at a score of 9-6.

Weekly News

Better watch out, opposition, because Jason Bay is back on track! This week, he wins his Sox.Rox leading 6th Player of the Week award, as he had an amazing week. This week he hit 4 HRs and 8 RBIs as he led the Sox to a respectable week. This week the Sox went 4-3, but lost when it counted as now they are .5 games behind the Rangers for the lead wild card spot at 66-51. The Sox are currently 8 games behind the Yankees who are currently playing the last of a series against the Mariners. Jason Bay has been in sort of a funk lately, this week really brought him back however as he hit his first homer since July 7th. So far this year, however, his line is .259, 25, 83, very good numbers. Hopefully the Sox can play some good baseball against AL East rivals, Blue Jays and Yankees next week.

Red Sox Grab New Shortstop

Today, the Red Sox dealt a minor league player for shortstop, Alex Gonzalez (right) from the Cincinnatti Reds. This year, Gonzalez has a .210 AVG, 3 Hrs, and 26 RBIs, as he is not the best of hitters but an excellent fielder, good defense at short has been something the Sox have been missing out on lately. In 2006, Alex Gonzalez played for the Red Sox and finished with a .255 AVG, 9 HRs, and 50 RBIs, but amazing defense. After beating the Tigers 3-1 in a 4 game series, Boston moves on the Texas for a 3 game series, which could decide the final wild card race. Gonzalez should join the team tommorrow in texas, we hope to see him make an impact!

Tazawa Has Impressive First Start

Last night the Red Sox beat Detroit, 7-5, giving rookie starter Junichi Tazawa his first career win. Tazawa gave 3 runs in the first (only one of them being earned), a bad start but, it did not pan out that way. In the second inning, Kevin Youkilis was clunked by a pitch and charged the mound, getting himself ejected, bringing Mike Lowell in as a replacement. Also in the second, Jason Bay hit a 3-run blast over the monster, tying it at 3-3. Later, Mike Lowell hit a pair of homers. While all this was happening, Junichi Tazawa (after the first), allowed no runs, two hits, and 6 Ks, in a 5 inning masterpeice. The Rangers and Rays lost, while the Yankees won, the Sox are 64-48, 5.5 games behind the Yankees, but 1.5 games ahead of Texas for wild card, and 3.5 ahead of the Rays!

Red Sox Break Record Skid

Yesterday the Red Sox beat the Tigers in an amazing game and Fenway Park. In the first inning, Dustin Pedroia hit a 2-run jack, then in the second Nick Green (right) hit a lead-off homer. Then the Sox scored once more to open up a 4-0 lead. Then The Tiger made it close in the 5th, as it became 4-3. Then in the bottom of the 5th, Jason Bay turned and watched one sail for his 22nd homer of the season, making it 5-3. Then Polanco and Thames each got RBIs in the 7th making it 5-5. But then Nick Green (right) hit a game-winning sacrifice fly, making it 6-5, the final score. The Yankees and Rays lost, and the Rangers didn't play. This makes the Sox at 63-48, 5.5 games behind the Yankees (Rays are 8 games back), The Red Sox are also .5 ahead in the Wild Card. (as the Rangers didn't play) Rookie pitcher, Junichi Tazawa will start against the Tigers tonight.

Triple Weekly News

3 three weeks have passed since the last Player of the Week, this Triple Player of the Week award goes to Kevin Youkilis. These 3 awards put him in a 3-way tie with David Ortiz and Jason Bay for the lead, with 5 awards total. These have been terrible 3 weeks, they are currently on a 6 game losing skid. They got swept in a 4-game series by the Yankees, and 2-game series against the Rays, within this losing streak. Kevin Youkilis has been a bright spot however, as he received 4 HRs, and 15 RBIs in this Red Sox slump. Another bright spot is that they acquired Victor Martinez from the Indians, a perrennial all-star catcher, unfortunately to get him, they had to trade Justin Masterson and two other prospects. They are also 62-48, and 6.5 games behind the Yankees, the Rays are only 8.0 back. The Sox are tied with teh Rangers for the Wild Card spot.
