Series Preview #1: Red Sox (0-0) @ Tigers (0-0)

A new feature of my blog this season will be series previews in which I will view the upcoming series and list some potential aspects. And finally it's the first series!!! Red Sox vs Tigers from Comerica Park in Detroit-- and trust me, it couldn't be a better Game 1 matchup. Red Sox starter Jon Lester (right) will start Opening Day for the second consecutive time for the Sox after going 15-9/3.47/182 in 2011. Meanwhile, on the hill for the Tigers is the big man, Justin Verlander, who won both the AL Cy Young and MVP after a remarkable 24-5/2.40/250 season in 2011. The Red Sox (875 runs in 2011) and Tigers (787 runs in 2011) have similar offenses with the Tigers' mega-addition of Prince Fielder (.299/38/120 in 2011) so these matchups should come down to the pitching. Thus, I'd give the Tigers the edge in today's matchup. After an off day tomorrow, the Sox will resume play on Saturday in a game looking to be a close one. Josh Beckett (13-7/2.89/175) and Doug Fister (11-13/2.83/146) will each take the hill for their respective teams. Both pitchers are looking at some regression-- however, Beckett's career ERA of 3.84 is higher than Fister's of 3.49 so I have to give the Tigers a slight edge in this one. Sunday is looking a little better for the Red Sox' chances as Clay Buchholz (6-3/3.48/60 in 14 starts) will complete his comeback-- he hasn't pitched since June 16 of last season. He will square off against Max Scherzer, who is coming off a down year at 15-9/4.43/174 in 2011. Again, these games should come down to the pitching and the Sox have a clear advantage in Game 3 so I'd predict a win there. Bold Prediction: Tigers win series 2-1.
