Double Weekly News

To all of those Sox.Rox fans, I am so sorry. I have been at my cousin's house for a week and I am sorry I couldn't make a post. Today, I am making a double weekly news meaning whoever gets this award gets two Player of the Week awards. And the winner is a man on a great comeback, Big Papi, David Ortiz! He got 3 HRs, and 7 RBIs these past weeks, more than Jason Bay and Varitek who tied for second. Over these 2 weeks, the Sox have gone 8-4, they have won every series they played 2-1. They are currently 47-29, John Smoltz is pitching tonight and go Smoltz! Tim Wakefield also is tied with Roy Halladay with 10 wins, as he is 10-3. Dice-K and Mike Lowell are injured however. These Sox have the 2nd best record in baseball and the best in the AL, they really are having a great season.

100, 500; Big Numbers

In the Red Sox' 6-1 win over the Marlins last night, 2 important events happened. Brad Penny (below) improved to 6-2 on the season and grabbed his 100th career win. Now, Fenway Park (right) had its 500th consecutive sellout. The streak started on May 15, 2003 and they have had no empty seats since then. Yesterday was also an impressive day for the Sox as for the 2nd straight night, they destroyed the Marlins, last night 6-1. Jacoby Ellsbury hit his 3rd homer of the year. Dustin Pedroia had 3 RBIs and 2 SB. The Red Sox try to keep the sweep tonight at 6:00.

Wakefield Catches 2nd in Wins

Last night, the Red Sox crushed the Florida Marlins, 8-2. One of the most important events of the night, was Tim Wakefield, moving into a tie for 2nd place in Wins with a 9-3 record this year, with a 4.29 ERA, which is not as impressive as the record. Today's knuckler worked pretty darn well as he worked 4 K's through 6 innings. Another important event is David Ortiz's 5th HR of the season. It was a solo shot into the Marlins' bullpen which jump-started an excellent 6-run inning. Later in that inning, Papi got a 2-run single as well. We will see if Wakefield can move to 1st place on Sunday against Atlanta.

Weekly News

Why should I even keep this up, Bay is Player of the Week for his 5th time. Yet again, he led the Sox to a good week as they went 5-1 this week with a 3-0 sweep over the Yankees and a 2-1 series win over the Phillies. They are currently 38-25 and have a 2 game lead in the AL East over New York. This week, Bay finished this week with 1 HR and 6 RBI. Bay leads the AL in RBIs and the Red Sox have the best record in the AL. Unless the Sox have a terrible week next week, they have 40 wins. A few injuries are also finishing up and the Sox are looking on where to put Smoltz and Lowrie is very close! Go Red Sox! They face the Marlins for a 3-game series then stay in Boston and face Atlanta. My prediction for next week is a 4-2.

Sox Ahead 2 Games in AL East!

Yesterday, the Sox recorded a successful sweep of the Bronx Bombers as they went on to win 4-3. In the bottom of the 8th, trailing 1-3, they had a 3-run rally and went on to win! The Sox are now 36-24, in first place by 2 games, in front of New York, who is 34-26. This was an exciting game so I will give you a "important-play" recap. This is what happened: in the top of the second, Papi hit a HR (1-0 Sox), in the top of the seventh, Francisco Cervelli hit a RBI double (1-1), in the top of the seventh, A-Rod hit a 2-run double (3-1 Yanks), In the bottom of the eighth, J.D. Drew (right) hit a RBI single (3-2 Sox), Youk hit a RBI single (3-3), Mike Lowell hit a sacrifice fly (4-3 Sox), and papelbon gets save #16.

Papi--Slump Over?

Yesterday the Red Sox went on the destroy the Yankees 7-0 and are now 6-0 against them. One of the biggest hits of the night however, was "Big Papi" David Ortiz's 3rd HR of the season. It was a 2-run shot to center, the first hit of the night, and a big one as it made the score 2-0 Sox in the 2nd. They went on to have a 4-run inning, as J.D. Drew hit a 2-run double off of the monster. Josh Beckett went on to lead the team in wins-loss ratio, as he is now 7-2, Wakefield is 7-3, Penny is 5-2, Matsuzaka is 1-4, and Lester is 5-5. Big Papi is now hitting .198 with 3 Hrs, and 24 RBIs. His 7-game hitting streak is a sign that the slump may be gone. Watch the Sox on ESPN Wednesday Night Baseball and 7:10 ET.

Dice-K Grabs First Win of '09

Last night, the Red Sox beat the Tigers 5-1, as Daisuke Matsuzaka (Dice-K) earned his first win of the 2009 season! He is now 1-3 with a 7.17 ERA. He earned 1 run and struck out 6 in 5 innings, as well as giving up only 6 hits. This was also Terry Francona's 500th career win in a Red Sox uniform so congratulations for him! Tonight at 7:05 ET the Sox face off against the Tigers on ESPN's Wednesday Night Baseball, pitching is Josh Beckett (Red Sox, 5-2) vs. Armando Gallaraga (Tigers, 3-5). Speaking of Gallaraga, I have a story. Last Thursday, my class had an overnight trip to Baltimore, we had a 2-hour free time, so my dad, me, and my roommates snuck out to an Orioles game! Orioles beat the Tigers 5-1 and Gallaraga got the loss!
